Safeguarding and Reconciliation Platforms Compared: AutoRek, Kani, Aurum and Safeheld

    Key takeaways

    • AutoRek, Kani Payments and Aurum are established providers of reconciliation and regulatory software to UK and international financial firms.
    • Each has its own focus: AutoRek across client assets, safeguarding and financial control; Kani on payments reconciliation and card scheme reporting; Aurum on reconciliation for payments and client assets.
    • Safeheld focuses on multi-entity, multi-jurisdiction customer-money control for payment, money transmission, remittance and digital-asset businesses.
    • The right choice depends on a firm's jurisdictions, entities, sources and regulatory obligations; firms should test each against their own data.

    How to read this comparison

This comparison describes each provider's focus as presented in its own published materials, to help firms build a shortlist. It does not rate products. Every firm's requirements differ, and every vendor should be tested directly against the firm's own data and obligations. Our guide to choosing reconciliation software sets out the criteria and trial method.

The comparison is written for heads of compliance, finance and treasury building a shortlist. It focuses on the problems each provider is designed to solve, which is usually the most useful first filter, rather than on features that change with each release.

    The providers

AutoRek is a long-established UK provider whose software is used for client assets (CASS), payments safeguarding, regulatory reporting and financial control, including a module for digital asset reconciliation. Kani Payments focuses on payments reconciliation and reporting for issuers, acquirers and payment firms, including card scheme reports such as Mastercard and Visa submissions, alongside safeguarding workflows. Aurum provides reconciliation software for payments, client assets and safeguarding, with content covering CASS, card scheme, PSP and ecommerce reconciliation. Safeheld focuses on reconciling every entity in a payment group across jurisdictions and applying each regime's customer-money rules in one workflow.

All four providers serve firms that hold money for others, and all four reconcile data from multiple sources. The differences lie in which industries and regulations each was built around, how each handles multiple entities and jurisdictions, and which sources it connects to out of the box.

    Choosing between them

A UK-only firm whose main need is CASS or safeguarding reconciliation has several established options. A card issuer whose main need is scheme reporting will weight that capability heavily. A group that operates entities in the US, UK, EU and elsewhere, holds customer money under several regimes and needs one view of every entity's position should weight multi-entity and multi-jurisdiction capability most.

Consider also where the business is heading. A firm planning to add US, Canadian or Asia-Pacific entities within two years should test whether each platform can support those regimes, because changing platforms after expansion is far harder than choosing well before it.

Whatever the shortlist, test each platform with a week of your own data, including your most difficult sources, and ask each to show the position for a past date exactly as it was. Our individual guides to evaluating an AutoRek alternative, a Kani alternative and an Aurum alternative set out specific questions.

Safeheld reconciles every entity under its own rules and applies the customer-money requirements of seven jurisdictions in one workflow. See safeguarding rules compared and Safeheld reconciliation.
