Simetrik Alternative: What Regulated Firms Need Beyond Matching

Evaluating a Simetrik alternative? What Simetrik does, where it is strong, and what licensed firms need beyond matching: safeguarding, returns and audit proof.

    Key takeaways

    • Simetrik describes itself as an AI-native financial control platform that automates reconciliation, reporting and exception handling for banks, payment companies, marketplaces and crypto exchanges.
    • Simetrik states it connects 5,500+ data sources, offers 100+ pre-built templates, serves 180+ companies in 50+ countries and processes 2.5 billion records a day.
    • A licensed firm that holds customer money also has to calculate a protected position for each licence, under rules such as CASS 15 in the UK or permissible investments in US money transmission law.
    • Each regulator asks for its own return from those positions, such as the FCA monthly safeguarding return or Section III of the NMLS MSB Call Report, and an offset between entities or currencies can hide a shortfall.
    • Simetrik does not publish pricing, and its public pages do not describe UK safeguarding returns, NMLS call reports or read-only auditor access, so a firm should ask directly.

    What is Simetrik, in brief?

Simetrik is a reconciliation and financial control platform that matches transactions across many data sources, manages the items that do not match and builds reports, used by banks, payment companies, marketplaces and crypto exchanges.

    What does Simetrik do?

Simetrik connects operational, partner and accounting data, matches it at transaction level under rules the customer configures, and sends whatever does not match to a team to resolve.

According to its platform page, Simetrik reads files from payment processors, card networks, banks and ERPs (enterprise resource planning systems, such as SAP or Oracle, that hold a company's accounts), normalises their formats and "adapts automatically when providers change their file structures". Its reconciliation software page describes one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many matching, meaning one record can be matched to one, several or a group of records on the other side. It also describes an Operation Center giving "a unified view of every reconciliation issue with standard format, severity classification, and root cause analysis", and accounting features that sync with the general ledger in SAP, Oracle, NetSuite or other ERPs.

Simetrik is specific about where AI sits. Its banks and neobanks page states that its "deterministic core executes the configured matching rules", so the same inputs always give the same result, while AI helps prepare data and suggests configuration for a person to review. An agent builds an execution plan for the user's approval before it configures reconciliations, schedules or alerts.

Its industry pages show the range. For marketplaces, Simetrik validates seller payouts and commissions against contract. For PSPs, it checks fees per payment method, country and currency. For crypto exchanges, it reconciles balances across wallet and custody accounts, confirms on-chain withdrawals against the blockchain transaction hash and generates proof of reserves evidence from verified transaction data. Its regulatory reporting page describes reports for financial authorities, card networks and tax agencies built from reconciled data, and the banks page names reports for CNBV (Mexico), SBS (Peru), BACEN (Brazil) and Superfinanciera (Colombia).

    Where is Simetrik strong?

Simetrik is strong at matching very large transaction volumes across many partners and feeding the result into the accounts, with particular depth among Latin American banks, payment companies and marketplaces.

    • Scale: Simetrik states it processes 2.5 billion records a day for 180+ companies in 50+ countries.
    • Breadth of connections: 5,500+ data sources and 100+ templates for card networks, processors and ERPs.
    • Configuration by finance teams: Simetrik states that finance and operations teams can set up reconciliations without IT.
    • Revenue assurance: checks on fees, commissions, chargebacks and FX rates, which recover money a firm is owed by its partners.
    • Accounting close: journal entries posted to the ERP, with Simetrik reporting month-end close shortened by up to 5 business days.
    • Security evidence: a wide set of stated certifications, including SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2 and PCI DSS, on its security page.

A firm whose main problem is matching high volumes across many processors and partners, and closing the books faster, should take Simetrik seriously. Our comparison of reconciliation platforms sets out the wider field.

Where does a licensed firm need more than matching?

A firm that holds customer money under a licence must show, every day and for each licence, that the money is protected under that licence's rules, and matching records is only the first step.

Matching answers whether two records agree. Safeguarding, the legal duty to keep customers' money separate and protected, asks a different question: does the money held for customers, in the accounts and assets the rules allow, cover what the firm owes them? The answer depends on the licence.

In the US, state money transmission laws set a permissible investments test, permissible investments being the classes of safe asset a state allows to count. Minnesota section 53B.61, for example, says a licensee "must maintain at all times permissible investments that have a market value" of not less than all of its outstanding money transmission obligations, and that these investments are held in trust even if mixed with other assets. In Canada, the Bank of Canada guideline says a payment service provider that holds end-user funds must keep them in a trust account used for no other purpose, or in a dedicated account backed by insurance or a guarantee, and should take daily measures to identify shortfalls. In the UK, the FCA's PS25/12 safeguarding rules for payment and e-money institutions came into force on 7 May 2026.

Each test has its own rules on which assets count, which receivables are capped and when money must be protected. Simetrik's own banks page draws the same boundary for its evidence, saying it "supports internal review and audit work; it does not itself establish regulatory compliance". The protected position is a calculation on top of matched data, and a regulated firm needs that calculation done per licence, every day.

Which regulator returns depend on the reconciled figures?

Each regulator asks for its own return on its own timetable, and every figure in it should come from the same reconciled position the firm manages daily.

    RegulatorReturn or requirementTiming
FCA (UK)Safeguarding return from each safeguarding institution (SUP 16.14A)Monthly, within 15 business days of month end
State regulators through NMLS (US)MSB Call Report, including Section III permissible investments and outstanding transmission liabilityQuarterly, 45 days after quarter end
Bank of CanadaAnnual report including any safeguarding shortfall, its amount and root cause; notice before insurance or a guarantee endsAnnual, plus 30 days' notice of cancellation
DNB (Netherlands)Quantitative data on third-party funds collected through prudential reportingCollected from 1 July 2024
HKMA (Hong Kong)Licensing regime for stablecoin issuers under the Stablecoins OrdinanceIn effect from 1 August 2025

Section III of the NMLS call report shows how specific a return can be. Line PI120 reports money received for transmission and not yet paid to beneficiaries. Receivables from each authorised delegate (an agent selling transfers on the licensee's behalf) that are under seven days old count only up to 10% of total permissible investments, and virtual currency balances are reported on their own lines. Filing timing is set out on the NMLS frequency page; our guides to the NMLS MSB call report and the UK monthly safeguarding return go line by line.

In the Netherlands, DNB's thematic review of 28 June 2024 found weak documentation and few specific safeguarding controls at payment and e-money institutions. In Hong Kong, the HKMA confirmed that the stablecoin issuer regime took effect on 1 August 2025. A group licensed in several of these places files several returns from one set of records, and each must agree back to that record.

Why must positions be held per entity and per currency?

Because each licence belongs to one legal entity and each obligation is owed in one currency, a surplus in one place cannot cover a shortfall in another.

Group dashboards that convert every balance into one currency and net the result are useful for treasury. A regulator, however, examines one licensed entity at a time, and a customer owed dollars is owed dollars. Simetrik's platform page mentions "entity-aware rules" in its accounting module; its public pages do not describe whether safeguarding positions are held per entity and per currency without offset, so this is a question to put to Simetrik directly.

Fiat and stablecoin now sit side by side. Simetrik's crypto page covers fiat and on-chain flows and wallet and custody balances, though it does not name stablecoins. A platform that settles merchants in USDC as well as local currency owes obligations in both, and each needs its own covered position; see stablecoins.

    What does an offset hide?

A group can look fully covered in total while one licensed entity is short.

Worked example. Nexus Payments has two licensed entities. Its UK e-money institution owes customers GBP 12.00 million and holds GBP 12.40 million in its safeguarding account. Its US money transmitter owes USD 8.00 million and holds USD 7.70 million of permissible investments. Group reporting converts sterling at 1.30 dollars per pound.

ItemUK entityUS entityGroup, netted in USD
    Owed to customersGBP 12.00m (USD 15.60m)USD 8.00mUSD 23.60m
    Held in protected assetsGBP 12.40m (USD 16.12m)USD 7.70mUSD 23.82m
Excess or shortfallGBP 0.40m excessUSD 0.30m shortUSD 0.22m excess

The UK excess, GBP 0.40 million or USD 0.52 million at 1.30, more than offsets the US gap of USD 0.30 million, so the group view shows a USD 0.22 million surplus. Yet the US entity is short by USD 0.30 million against its permissible investments test, and the UK excess cannot legally be used to cover it. Only a position held for each entity, in its own currency, shows the gap the day it opens.

How do Simetrik and Safeheld compare?

Simetrik is a broad transaction-matching and financial control platform; Safeheld is narrower, built around the protected position and the returns of each licensed entity.

What should a regulated firm test in any Simetrik alternative?

Test the regulated outcome, not the match rate, because every serious platform matches well.

    • Show the protected position for each licensed entity and each currency, with no netting between them.
    • Apply each licence's rules: CASS 15 in the UK, permissible investments and delegate receivable caps in each US state, trust or insurance arrangements in Canada.
    • Produce the UK monthly safeguarding return and Section III of the NMLS call report from the same figures as the daily position.
    • Handle fiat and stablecoin obligations and holdings in one view, each covered in its own asset.
    • Raise a shortfall the day it appears and record who investigated it, the cause and the evidence.
    • Show the position for a past date exactly as it stood on that date.
    • Give auditors and safeguarding banks read-only access, so they can check figures without asking the finance team.
    • Forecast funding needs per entity and currency, with movements approved by more than one person.
    • Run in parallel with the current process for a full reporting cycle before cut-over.

    How does Safeheld help?

Safeheld reconciles bank statements, processor and partner reports, ledgers, custody and blockchain wallet records every day, and holds one position per legal entity in its own currency, never offset against another entity, agreeing back to a group total.

Breaks are raised the day they appear, and the UK monthly safeguarding return, NMLS call report packs and packs for the Bank of Canada, DNB, MAS, HKMA and ASIC are prepared from the same reconciled figures, with audit packs and read-only access for auditors and banks.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is Simetrik?

Simetrik describes itself as an AI-native financial control platform. It reconciles transactions across data sources at transaction level, manages exceptions, posts accounting entries to ERPs and builds reports, for banks, payment companies, marketplaces, crypto exchanges and merchants.

What are the alternatives to Simetrik?

Alternatives depend on the need. For high-volume matching and faster close, firms compare other reconciliation and financial close platforms. For licensed firms that must prove customer money is protected and file safeguarding returns, firms look at regulatory reconciliation platforms such as Safeheld.

    Does Simetrik publish its pricing?

No. As at 26 October 2026, Simetrik's website does not publish pricing and offers a demo on request.

Does Simetrik use AI to match transactions?

Simetrik states that its deterministic core executes the matching rules the customer configures, while AI helps prepare data and suggests configuration for a person to review, and an agent builds plans for the user's approval.

    Does Simetrik prepare regulatory reports?

Simetrik states it builds reports for financial authorities, card networks and tax agencies from reconciled data, and names reports for CNBV, SBS, BACEN and Superfinanciera. Its public pages do not mention the UK monthly safeguarding return or the NMLS MSB Call Report.

Why is matching not enough for safeguarding?

Matching shows whether records agree. Safeguarding requires the money held in permitted accounts and assets to cover what is owed to customers, under each licence's own rules, for each legal entity and currency, and reported to each regulator.

What is the UK monthly safeguarding return?

Under SUP 16.14A of the FCA Handbook, each safeguarding institution must submit a safeguarding return to the FCA within 15 business days of the end of each calendar month.

Can Simetrik and a regulatory reconciliation platform be used together?

Yes. A firm can use a matching and close platform for transaction operations and the general ledger, and a regulatory reconciliation platform to calculate each licensed entity's protected position and prepare the returns, provided both work from the same source records.
